There are certain types of business which will benefit from having a flake ice machine – for instance, food processing businesses including baking, any store or restaurant where food is on display, and even in building and construction. In this edition of our blog we’ll talk a little bit more about flake ice in these particular scenarios.

1.    Flake Ice in the Food Sector

Flake ice is a relatively soft and mouldable type of ice with a texture that is best described as snow-like. It's perfect for use in food displays as it will keep food fresh, cold, and looking aesthetic. It's also light and sticks to itself and forms shapes quite easily – so it can be moulded into shapes around the food on display, or set up ready for it to be placed and positioned. Flake ice offers creative possibilities as well as usefulness.

It's not just food which can be displayed using flake ice (as well as enjoying the practical benefits). Drinks are often stored in tubs of flake ice to keep vans and bottles cool and looking good. Flake ice is also perfect for use in cocktails or speciality drinks for bars, restaurants and cafes which serve them.

Within the food industry there are other uses than just display or in cocktails! Flake ice actually has a fantastic practical use in the baking process.

Flake Ice in Bakeries

Flake ice is the perfect control measure in the baking industry. The process of making bread (or other baked goods) is possible to ‘get wrong’ quite easily. The dough can heat up and, in effect, start to cook itself due to the activity of kneading, so it is important to keep the temperature down. Using flake ice to control the temperature of the mixture and retard yeast growth is a smart move. Flake ice melts quickly and evenly - if you use other types of ice it melts unevenly so there are lumps remaining in the mix which become air pockets within the finished baked product (bread etc).

There are other used for flake ice, including in the medical and building industries.

2.    Flake Ice in the Medical Profession

There are a number of uses for flake ice in the medical and pharmaceutical spheres, so it's not uncommon for industrial ice machines to be a central features of businesses. Medical professionals use flake ice to cool injured or strained areas on the body because this type of ice is easily mouldable and can reach a greater surface area. Pharmaceutical companies also use flake ice during transportation to keep their medicines and other temperature sensitive products cool.

3.    Flake Ice in the Building Industry

Concrete must stay at the right temperature when it is being mixed, when it is being transported, and when it is being applied. If not kept at the optimum temperature, the effectiveness of the concrete can become compromised. Flake ice can be used to add water to the concrete as it is being poured, which will reduce the likelihood of it cracking. If the temperature of the concrete mix is not controlled during pouring and curing, it's possible that there will be flaws and the integrity of the finished product will be affected.
